JEREMIAH'S PIT

Jerusalem, Israel

Underneath the stones, weeds, and rubble, the City of David is actually a work in progress where ongoing excavations seem to confirm many of known biblical narratives. Jeremiah's Pit was found just inside the entrance to the City of David National Park. The largest of the cisterns uncovered here, it is located in what was probably the courtyard of the contemporary Israelite king.

During the summer of 1998, while cleaning the outer courtyard of the Upper Observation Point, a small opening was uncovered leading deep underground. Using ropes explorers descended over 24 feet underground (7 meters) into an ancient royal water cistern 45 feet (15 meters) in diameter, with seven small openings. This cistern conjures powerful images of the story of the Prophet Jeremiah, "…and they took Jeremiah and cast him into the pit" (Jeremiah 38:6)

The Exhibition deals with the archeological biblical findings and places them in the appropriate scenery. The museological design seeks the most respectable representation of the historical stamps, found in the excavations, that connects the water cistern to the story of the prophet Jeremiah. The stamps will be presented in the tunnel, leading the visitors to the main event- Jeremiah's pit
