The Chabad House Complex – Chiang Mai

Chabad House Chiang Mai was designed as a warm, open, and welcoming community building — a place that gives visitors a true sense of home, even when they are far away from it. Beyond its role as a religious and community center, the building aims to create an experience of connection: between people and community, between spirit and material, and between contemporary architecture and the local nature of Northern Thailand.

At the heart of the building is a spacious internal garden, serving as the central axis of the project. A large roof opening brings natural light down through all levels of the building, reaching the ground floor and creating a living, bright, and breathable space. Around the garden, the hospitality, prayer, study, and gathering areas are organized, with the vegetation becoming an integral part of the architectural experience.

The project combines everyday functionality, rich tropical greenery, and subtle Jewish elements. The building’s facade draws inspiration from the concept of the “Tree of Life” — a motif expressed both in the exterior envelope and at the heart of the building, through the tree and internal vegetation growing upward. This creates one continuous design language that connects the exterior with the interior, Jewish symbolism with the local climate and landscape.

The goal was to create a Chabad House that does not feel institutional, but rather alive, human, and embracing — a place that invites people to enter, stay, eat, pray, learn, and feel a sense of belonging.
